The Nairobi-Mombasa corridor is the busiest travel route in Kenya, and it has improved dramatically in recent years. The Madaraka Express SGR train now covers the distance in under five hours, making it the easiest and most comfortable option.
Book SGR tickets online or at the station a few days ahead, especially on weekends and holidays. First class has wider seats and includes a meal; economy is perfectly adequate and much cheaper. The train leaves Nairobi and Mombasa early in the morning and again in the afternoon, so a day trip is possible.
If the train is full, the bus is the fallback. Several companies run modern coaches with air conditioning and Wi-Fi, though the journey can take eight to ten hours depending on traffic leaving Nairobi. Mash Poa, Modern Coast, and Guardian Angel are reputable operators. Avoid night buses if you value sleep.
The route passes through Athi River, Voi, and the Tsavo ecosystem. If you have time, break the journey with a night or two in Tsavo East or West. The red elephants of Tsavo East and the lava flows of Tsavo West are excellent additions to a safari itinerary.
Mombasa feels completely different from Nairobi: slower, more humid, and with a strong Swahili-Arab influence. Explore Fort Jesus, the old town's narrow streets, and the food market at Likoni. The beaches of Diani are a short ferry and taxi ride away.
Safety on both train and bus is generally good, but keep valuables with you and avoid displaying expensive electronics. Buy bottled water and snacks before boarding, and have small bills ready for taxis and tuk-tuks at either end.
