Colombia in Two Weeks: From Cartagena to Medellín

Colombia has moved past its reputation and become one of South America's most rewarding destinations. The country is huge, but two weeks is enough to taste the Caribbean coast, the coffee region, and one of its most dynamic cities.

Start in Cartagena. The walled old town is touristy but beautiful, especially early in the morning before the cruise-ship crowds arrive. Spend two days wandering the colourful streets, then escape to the nearby Rosario Islands for a night of quiet beaches and clear water.

From Cartagena, fly to Medellín. The city has excellent weather, a metro system that locals are proud of, and neighbourhoods like Comuna 13 that have transformed from no-go zones into vibrant open-air galleries. Take the cable car up to Parque Arví for views and cooler air.

Add three days in the Coffee Triangle around Salento. Hike the Cocora Valley to see the towering wax palms, tour a working coffee farm, and eat trout cooked in local style. The pace here is slow and the landscapes are green and hilly.

Safety in Colombia is generally good on the tourist route, but keep your phone out of sight in cities and avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas. Learn a few Spanish phrases — English is less common than in Southeast Asia. Budget around 50 to 70 euros a day for a comfortable mid-range trip.
