Into the Sahara: A Night in the Merzouga Dunes

There are deserts, and then there is the Sahara. The dunes of Erg Chebbi rise like a sea of burnt-orange waves outside the village of Merzouga, and spending a night among them is one of those travel experiences that justifies the long drive from Marrakech or Fes.

Most travellers arrive on a three-day tour from Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas, the Todra Gorge, and the palm valleys of the Dades before reaching the dunes by late afternoon. The drive is roughly nine hours each way, so if you are short on time, consider flying to Errachidia and arranging a local transfer.

The classic experience is a camel trek into the camp. You ride for an hour or two as the sun drops, the sand changes from gold to rose to deep purple, and the silence becomes almost physical. Camps range from basic Berber tents with shared bathrooms to luxury setups with private tents, hot showers, and gourmet dinners.

Do not skip the dawn wake-up call. Climbing a dune in the dark, sitting on the crest with a cup of sweet mint tea, and watching the sun paint the Sahara in layers of orange and shadow is the reason people come. Bring a headlamp, a warm layer, and shoes you do not mind filling with sand.

The best months are October to April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and nights are cool. Summer is brutally hot and best avoided unless you specifically want to test your heat tolerance. December and January can be cold after dark, so pack a fleece.

A few tips: book your camp directly or through a reputable local operator rather than a random tout in Marrakech; confirm whether the price includes the camel ride, dinner, breakfast, and return transfer; and carry cash because there are few ATMs once you leave the main road.
