Jordan is compact, safe, and packed with world-class sights. A one-week itinerary easily covers Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, and the capital Amman, with time left over for a float in the Red Sea at Aqaba.
Start in Amman. The Roman Theatre, the Citadel, and the downtown souks are worth a day. Jordanian food is excellent — try mansaf, falafel, and knafeh from street vendors. Amman is hilly, so wear comfortable shoes and expect stairs.
Petra deserves at least two days. The classic approach through the Siq to the Treasury is unforgettable, but the real magic is in the longer hikes: the Monastery, the High Place of Sacrifice, and the less-visited back trail. Buy the Jordan Pass online before arrival — it covers the visa fee and entry to Petra and many other sites.
Wadi Rum is best experienced by staying overnight in a Bedouin camp. The desert landscape of red sand and dramatic rock formations feels otherworldly, especially at sunrise and sunset. Jeep tours, camel rides, and star-gazing are the main activities.
Float in the Dead Sea on your way back north. The water is so salty that swimming is impossible — just lean back and let yourself bob. Rinse off thoroughly afterwards and avoid shaving for a day or two before your dip. The best time to visit Jordan is March to May and September to November, when temperatures are pleasant.
